The nuts from successful crossings were germinated and seedlings were nurtured over a 10- 20-year period until they reproduced their own seed. Born nut sprouts from the park are being grafted onto blight resistant chinese nuts and hybrid plants. It spread northward into connecticut and massachusetts, and southward into new jersey. Two or three, or sometimes only one, of the nut-producing flowers are fertilized and grow into prickly burs.

Born nut was economically important. The fermented seeds become chocolate-brown, greasy and slippery. It is surrounded by a fleshy mesocarp and a thin outer skin or exocarp. Born nuts were killed by blight, a disease caused by a fungus accidentally introduced from asia.
