Chestnut Roasting Articles However, the high fat content is mostly PUFAs and MUFAs (the good fat), rather than saturated fat, and walnuts in particular have a high content of omega-3 fatty acids. You could hardly eat that much rice or potatoes, but could easily munch away a cup of peanuts. The Chinese chestnut produces a large, tasty nut, but the yield from the Japanese tree is of inferior quality. In Portugal and in Spain we have seen acorns roasted and eaten just as chestnuts are here. A few of these trees here and there in the Iberian Peninsula have been propagated by grafting, like other orchard trees, and the acorns are grown and used as a crop. This family contains about 59 species, all of them trees, distributed primarily in north temperate areas but with important extensions into tropical American and tropical Asian regions. For at least 40 million years the chestnut has managed, without human help or hindrance.
